Sally is a big beautiful white and black drake who adores attention. He follows us around and begs for attention. When he does not get as much as he thinks he deserves he lets us know about it.Chuckie Duckie is a sweet, quiet female who sticks close to Sally but does not like as much human attention as Sally. She knows her name and responds to us when we call to her but she is much more concerned with digging for worms and bugs than accepting our affections.
Some of my favorite things about Sally and Chuckie besides their beauty and eggs are the fact that they are wonderful foragers and they are wonderful natural fly and mosquito control around the place.
Update: Sadly we lost our sweet Chuck to a fox just as she had chosen her place for her first clutch of eggs. While we can never replace our Chuck, someday we will find a new hen for our sweet Sally. Sally twice fought off the vixen that took his Chuck. The third time the fox attacked I was outside to intervene. If I had not been outside I don’t think Sally would have survived that last time. I brought him inside to clean his bites and other wounds and he stayed inside for two weeks to heal. He is back outside with his flock of ducks who are all now proudly protected by Kudzu.
